It's Decided!!

I've lived in my house for a little over a year now and been toying with the idea of painting all the original wood work in the living room and dining room.  After seeing this gorgeous trim today on Martha Stewart, I'm decided - YES, YES, YES!

The walls in my living room are the same shade as the Martha Stewart room and I'm going to use a nice creamy white for the trim.

Here are the before photos:

Leaving the door as is, painting the trim...

Wood panelling to be painted in BM Stone House to match the rest of the walls.  PS, the picture tube on my old tv is failing so I'm getting a new tv as well this week - 21st century, here I come :)

Better view of trim to be painted - see how much shellac they put on the trim?!  OMG - it looks so awful!

Wanting to paint or refinish the table, too.  Sigh...

So there it is.  I'm planning to use the Zinsser oil based primer so that I don't have to sand, but I've heard it's very smelly.  This project will have to wait for some cooler days so I can leave the windows open all day and night.  Wish I  was better at taking photos of these tiny rooms, they really are much cuter than my photos show.  You'll just have to use your imagination.

I'm so excited now.  Can't wait to see it finished!!!

Stay tuned...

Fleur de Lis Tray

I got this huge tray at a garage sale:

After many suggestions from blogger friends, I decided to make a sign out of it.  I searched through tonnes of images and found one I really liked:

but how to get the image onto my tray???

The simplest method for me was to hand-paint it.  I can copy almost anything, so I took the tray out to my workshop and started out by drawing what I wanted onto it in chalk:

Then I painted over the letters with white paint. After it was dry, I sanded the edges and the surface with a sanding sponge.  I also decided it needed some embellishment so I added  "Le".

The letters aren't as sharp as I'd like them, but it's kind of olde worlde charming as well, I think...  Oh well, I may paint the whole thing white and then transfer the image instead if I get tired of the way this looks.  Isn't doing your own thing fun???  You can change anything up at anytime.  Lovin' it!

For now I'm going to hang it in my living room.  Happy!

Cheers!

Bright Idea

A very long time ago, I bought an old fashioned looking glass lamp shade.  I fell in love with it when I saw it and it was marked down to $5 so I couldn't resist.  I swapped it out for a shade on an existing sconce in my last house but that sconce was upgraded when I was preparing to sell the place and the base disappeared during the renos.  I still have the shade though...

So I moved into my new house and the shade sat on the shelf in a closet for a year.  Yesterday I came across it again and decided I really wanted to use it.  I have an Ikea lamp in my kitchen:

So I checked to see if the shade might fit this lamp and it did!

Have a great weekend.
