The room is 11 x 15 and has baseboard heaters against the walls and doors to the outside, the hallway, the bathroom and the closet - it was very hard to figure out a layout that doesn't block the heaters and doesn't feel like a bowling alley!
So here are the befores and afters:
B E F O R E S
I didn't mind the orange when I first moved in. It felt cheerful and I liked it with all the white.
During the summer, I moved the desk into this position to try and fill up some of the excess space in the room.
Welcome to my new master bedroom!!
Everything is freshly painted - oh but this is a part-way through the process shot. Notice the benches haven't been "France-i-fied" yet
The new cushion on the chair is a sequined Christmas cushion I bought on sale for 94 cents with a new reversible cover I sewed from a patterned tea towel (also bought on sale) and some leftover fabric from a pair of taupe velvet drapes I had shortened.
Here's the reverse side
The nightstands look sooooo much better now!
I picked up a string of battery powered mini lights and some grapevine balls after Christmas and decided to use them together with this cloche to create my own little night light. A little piece of burlap and a tiny black ribbon finish it off. It looks really pretty lit up at night :)
I jerry-rigged a queen sized headboard so I could place the bed a foot away from the wall and not totally block off the baseboard heater.
I really want to add some bedding with pattern and colours to punch up the room, so if anyone has any ideas of what colours would work well please share!!
B E F O R E
Complete with my newly built headboard from a vintage door.
Whew - what an odyssey this makeover has been! The energy flows better with this new furniture layout and I sleep better, too! So happy :)

That's a great job, Anne. Even a change in the furniture placement can make such a difference; you've done so much more.
ReplyDeleteI loved you new look for the Master Bedroom. The colors seem more conducive to a better sleep. All your painted furniture looks super great. Thank you so much for sharing all your idea and work with us,

The room looks so soothing and relaxing. I love the color you chose for the walls! And all your re-do's came together quite well. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe room looks great Anne! So light and airy. Great!
ReplyDeleteHi Anne,
ReplyDeleteWhat a ton of work you did! It all looks so simple in a series of photos, but I can tell a lot of work went into this makeover.
The final room feels very calm and serene. With everything being so neutral, you could make big changes in your bedding according to the season. I don't know about you, but I get bored with my bedding and always want to change things up for a fresher look.
I don't mind the look of your stand-in headboard.
Check out the wallpaper floral headboard in this post: http://decor8blog.com/2012/01/20/creative-decorating-idea/ I like the room colors and the way the headboard sits off the wall.
Have a great weekend!
this is great...what fun to redo your room! it looks very peaceful!

I honestly didn't mind the orange too because orange reminds me of bright colors of provence. However I LOVE the new paint on your bedroom! It is so you! It gived a soft warm feel and looks more elegant! Awesome job!

It is gorgeous! i liked the before too. I hear that orange is the new color now.

The neutrals really opened up the room to make it seem larger, Anne. Moving the bed location changed the look, too. It all seems so fresh and modern now. No wonder you're sleeping better! :-) Visiting from From My Back Porch to Yours. ~ Sue
ReplyDeleteLooks great...sleep tight :) Laurel
ReplyDeleteEverything is lovely, if it was me, I know it's not, but I would just stay with the white coverlet. It's very restful, I find.
ReplyDeleteHugs, cindy
Everything looks so fresh and beautiful...love it!

You did a great job, Anne! I love the wall color. How great that you have a door to the yard right there. That must be wonderful in the warmer months. I am working on my bedroom, too, but mine is not so much a redo as a getting it to where I like it since we just moved here a few months ago. It's coming along, but I still have a couple of things I want to do.
ReplyDeleteIm glad you linked up to my party last Friday.. I hope to see ya again this Friday :)
ReplyDeleteHello from Ontario, Canada. Your bedroom is very pretty and I like all the lovely touches, especially the wire cloche with the lights. I am currently working on our basement guest suite and although my accessories are not yet finished, I am held up by the exact same things as you -a white bedspread/quilt and constructing our headboard. If you get a chance stop by to see the progress so far.
ReplyDeleteI love your new bedroom, Anne, it looks so peaceful. I love blue [here on Vancouver Isle] so I'd use a beautiful turquoise or royal blue for bedding & a few accent pieces.
ReplyDeleteBut I could see any bright colour fitting in well with your current scheme -- you could add green to highlight your plants, or a reddish-orange would go nice with your starfish, or a bright yellow would be cheerful.
What's your favourite bright colour? Can't wait to see how it goes.

I'm definitely thinking some combination of a soft aqua, cream and taupe in a subtle pattern. Thank you for popping in!
DeleteHi, Love your new Master. The color you chose makes it seem a more relaxing place to be. I too liked the orange (my favorite color) because it reminded me of a beach condo, but I don't think I could have relaxed much in the orange room. Finishing my Master is on my "round-to-it" list and I've gotten some great ideas here. enJOYed the tour very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a dramatic difference, Anne! It all looks wonderful! Thank you for sharing your wonderful project at Potpourri Friday!
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry it took me so long to get to your « Impossibility Challenge » post – this thing called “work” got in the way! But I’m here now and it’s great to read about your bedroom makeover. To be honest, I really liked the orange (our bedroom is like, mustard and blue - not our choice, but I quite like it!) but when I saw your makeover colour choice I can see how much better - and how much more tranquil! - the bedroom is now. It's beautiful. Well done!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on making your impossibility possible!
What a lovely makeover.....much better then the orange...I have the exact same color in my entire house...we just moved in and I didn't have to change a thing...I found that color goes with everything...you asked about colors...my guest room is done in red...my master has navy blue and all French accents....FR has brown with red touches...everything goes with this base color....if you stop by my blog and go back a page or two (or three) you can see all the colors I used....
ReplyDeleteHi, I love your bedroom! We put beadboard on the walls in our room, just part way up and we haven't yet painted the top portion of the walls. (I'm having a horrible time finding a color!) Hubby wants to paint soooooooooooo badly, he asked for paint for the bedroom for Christmas! Anyway, I love the wall color you used! Would you mind me asking what color it is???? Thanks in advance!
ReplyDeleteKim
Lovely! I pinned the fleur de lis!
ReplyDeleteI love it! The new color is so much more peaceful. And I love the starfish!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking up to the challenge!

Hi @anonymous Kim!! Hope you're monitoring this because I have no other way of reaching you... The paint colour is Benjamin Moore Lenox Tan in latex eggshell finish. Only I ran out of paint and had to get Home Depot to colour match, so I finished the job with Behr's Paint & Primer in one (I'm totally sold on that paint now!) and they did an awesome job of matching.
ReplyDelete(Our local BM dealer went out of business, so sad!)
Anne, Thanks SO SO MUCH!!! I'll be picking it up tomorrow!! DH will be sooooooo happy!!!! Kim
Deletearen't you a decoration fairy! amazing jog. i adore white furniture :)
ReplyDeletethank you! and thanks for visiting :)
DeleteAwesome makeover! Love your blog...I'm on my way up to hit that follow button!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful room! It looks so peaceful. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI live in New Orleans, Louisiana. I love your fleur de lis embelishments. I don't know if there are any Bed, Bath & Beyond stores in Canada. It is also not very colorful, black and beige. But they do have a fleur de lis patterened quilt set. Nice job. Tina
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tip! I'll check out the on-line store since there isn't one anywhere near me.
DeleteYour room looks so pretty! I actually really like the quilt draped headboard- it looks really soft and feminine! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great makeover Anne! Everything looks great, but the piece that really caught my eye is the grapevine ball stuffed cloche.
ReplyDeleteI have a bunch of these balls in storage. I love this idea! Now I just need to come up with some kind of cloche. Hmmm...maybe Hobby Lobby has something I can use a 40% off coupon on.
I love your blog and am a new follower :)
Hi Anne,
ReplyDeleteThe changes you have made to your master bedroom are gorgeous!! I want to head in there for a nap. :)
I have been trying to find a screen cover like you have on your smaller window as I have one large and one small window and this looks tops!!
Do you know where I could buy one? Or did you make it?
Regards,
Rose.
@Rose - Hi Rose, I'm afraid that was a yard sale find. You can buy shutters or build them to fit your window or just keep hitting yard sales until you find something that will work! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comments!
