I'm in a "let's freshen up the house with paint" mode. The next victim:
my Ikea Markor sideboard.
This photo doesn't do it justice, it is a really beautiful piece and I've struggled again with the concept of painting over real wood; however, the knotty pine thing is over for me! I think this piece will look gorgeous if I find the right paint treatment. So time for homemade chalky finish paint experiment #2! (To see experiment #1 click HERE.)
This time I used a ratio of 1 cup paint to 1/4 cup Plaster of Paris. I only mixed in enough water to take the lumps out of the PoP before mixing it into the paint - exactly like adding flour to gravy! I'm using a custom colour to achieve an antique ivory look. My inspiration piece - from Pinterest of course!
I love the faint distressing, it looks old but not beat up, just what I want.
Things went much better this time, the paint still scratched but not nearly as much as my first project. I'm so happy with it - and I haven't even waxed it yet!
For my paint colour, I started by mixing a very pale yellow together with some BM Lenox Tan and then added some Raw Umber from my acrylic paints until I got a warm ivory. After two coats of paint were dry, I mixed Lenox Tan with 7 drops of Raw Umber. I used a slightly wet rag dipped in the paint to wipe all over the piece, always wiping in the direction of the wood grain. I had to keep wetting the rag to get the look I wanted and it turned out AWESOME!!
My kitchen doesn't get much natural light, so it's really difficult to get a great photo. Hopefully you can see the variation in colour on this shot:

No contest here! Hands down the piece looks a million times better painted!! Very happy with this homemade chalk finish paint experience. And the rough, chalk-like finish smooths right out with a light sanding so it feels nice to the touch as well.

Anne, I saw your project in one of last week's linky parties and thought I commented on it, but guess not! It really turned out great- a real complement to the inspiration piece. I've been making my own "chalky" paint, only I use calcium carbonate because the texture of it is so much finer than POP or grout. works like a charm. I recently re-did a desk and posted about it. So, did you change back to the old interface or change the e-mail address in your profile? Don't know why things would change up all of a sudden. Weird.... I'll pop over again soon. :-) Sue

Did you have any trouble with the knots bleeding through the paint? Did you primer it first?
ReplyDeleteKristie, I didn't use primer and the knot holes do not show through. I used two coats of chalk paint and sanded lightly after the second coat dried - still no knot holes!
