Guest Room Cottage Style Makeover

A few weeks ago I stumbled on an unannounced clearance sale on Target's Rachel Ashwell shabby chic quilts. I bought a single sham and a twin sized quilt for a total price of $35. I had intended to use the quilt as a throw but when I got home, my plans changed...

My name is Anne and I have a linen addiction. Over the years I've accumulated many quilts in different styles, shapes and colours. I adore them!!! Only thing is, they are sitting in a linen closet instead of being on view. Thank you Target, for inspiring me to a guest room quilt explosion makeover!

I took down my tea towel curtains and replaced them with a pink, white and yellow quilted throw that I folded in half.  A matching white matelasse throw and shams add another layer- the throw is being used as a table cloth.

I painted my trunk to match the trim in the room and then painted the straps on the trunk in pale aqua.  That ugly bed railing is going to be replaced by a home-made bed frame someday soon.  It's actually a futon and I want to get rid of it asap!!

I had a piece of satin that I draped over the lampshade to give it a shabby chic look.

A seersucker duvet in off-white keeps the colours from being overwhelming.

I cut a piece of plywood into the shape of beach cabanas and glued wood squares on.  I painted it to match all the colours in the room.  The letters are written in black Sharpie and I hung crystals across the sign for a whimsical look.

It wouldn't be a photo shoot if Max didn't hone in on the action. Here he is looking very impressed with the makeover - NOT.  He's actually trying to figure out how to get to the tulips I have on the window sill.  He loves to eat tulips... sigh.  No more fresh flowers for me this spring!!

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Have a great week!   xox

  1. I love it, Anne, and the sign! It looks spring.

The Shabby Chic Line is so pretty. A few weeks ago here, Target had the lilac color on clearance.

  2. Your room looks so lovely and peaceful I almost fell asleep! LOL! Seriously those Shabby Chic items were a deal! Whoa! Even at Target they can cost ya a pretty penny. All the subtle rose and pale shades really pop with the wall color! I adore that contrast. When my boys were toddlers I didn't have fresh flowers much for the same reason as Max (well, they didn't exactly want to eat them as much as put them in their mouths and grab them). I'd like to tell you that once Max gets older he may not be as interested, but considering his history thus far, I cannot. Perhaps it's time to build some high shelves!

  6. Your shabby rose comforter adds just the right amount of colour to your guest room!
I like how you used your other quilts for the table scarf and the curtains too Anne.

  7. We used to vacation at at lake up in Wisconsin and we always stayed in one of the lake house cottages. Your guest room is bringing back those memories, it looks so comfy and cozy! Love how you simply draped a quilt over the window hardware, clever. May I ask, is that your photography above the bed and what about that fleur de lis bedside stump, is that one of your projects?

  9. Hi Anne,
It feels very Spring like. The room is beautiful. I love linen also. I have some many comforter sets...they have taken over my closet. Every time I get ready to buy another one...my daughter asks me why am I buying it...because she says I don't need it. She is my conscious...haha!! I am trying so hard to resist temptation.

  10. Your room is a breath of fresh air. A comfy place to retreat. Although I may not purchase them, my favorite dept in any store is always the housewares. :-)

  16. This room looks great Anne! I used to love the shabby chic style but my decorating has moved away from it... although I still love it, I am impressed how you managed to incorporate the style into this room without it being OVERLY shabby chic, know what I mean? I would call it more cottage/farmhouse/shabby! Lol! Have a great week.

    1. Thank you Tania! I know exactly what you mean and I feel the same way, I like touches of shabby chic but it can be overwhelmingly shabby if you go too far!!

      Happy Monday!!

  17. It looks good, but I'm making note to stay out of Target, I have no room for any more linens.

  20. Quilts are my weakness... My daughter and I have had to stay away from Target for a bit. Their clearance sections are very addicting! Your guest room is so inviting! :)

  21. Your room looks great! I don't think there's anything more welcoming in a guest room than a pretty quilt on the bed, and with the extra quilt details you've added, it really looks amazing. It's hard to get annoyed at the pets when they look so cute ... my dog only goes for garbage (which in itself isn't great, but at least he's not jumping at my flowers). Wendy x

  25. It looks lovely. I have a slight quilt addiction too, maybe we should help each others! I use white linen on my bed, so I can have a quilt on the foot of the bed (does that makes sens in English?) - near the railing like you do) and matching cushions... But my bedroom isn't as pretty as yours: it hasn't been redone yet and stores too many boxes while I remodel downstairs!

  26. Beautiful Anne!...just let me know if summer is the best time to visit!!! ... and tell Max he will have to give up the guest room!!!

  31. Soooo pretty !
I was so excited when Target came to Canada and apparently they're not doing good here at all !!!
I've found great deals ( lamps in particular )
Oh and I have a curtain addiction - pathetic - if I tell you when we moved I found 8 set of the exact same white linen drapes would you believe me - 8 sets of the exact same drapes - guess I wanted them in every room once upon a time lol
I really love the quilt on the side table - great idea!
